change MUI language pack in Windows 7 home and professional

The final version of Windows 7 has hit the roads and users which had tested Windows 7 beta get disappointed: It is no longer possible to change MUIs, display language of Win 7, anymore – it seems.
First of all, changing display language (“installing MUI”) has been a feature limited to Ultimate and Enterprise versions. The beta was “Ultimate”, therefore changing was neat and easy possibly through the regions screen.
For all other versions you will have to get the appropriate “lp.cab”, i.e. from the Language Pack DVD. Then, type this in a command prompt as Administrator (change path and language code appropriately):
dism /online /add-package /packagepath:D:\langpacks\de-de\lp.cab
bcdedit /set {current} locale de-DE
bcdboot %WinDir% /l de-DE
After that, remove the registry folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MUI\UILanguages\en-US. Reboot, bitteschön!
Update 2: If you get this error:
An error occured trying to open d:\de-de\langpacks\lp.cab Error:0×80070003 The System cannot find the path specified
… copy the lp.cab to C:\ (the root directory) and run dism from there. Remember that the command line shell must be run as Administrator.

Auf Deutsch: Die Sprache zu ändern hat Microsoft nur für die Enterprise und Ultimate Versionen von Windows 7 vorgesehen. Die Beta war eine Ultimate, deshalb war das dort so bequem möglich und deshalb sind soviele Umsteiger enttäuscht.
Aber auch in der Professional und Home und anderen Versionen lässt sich die Sprache ändern! Das geht über die Kommandokonsole als Administrator, wie folgt:
dism /online /add-package /packagepath:D:\langpacks\de-de\lp.cab bcdedit /set {current} locale de-DE bcdboot %WinDir% /l de-DE“langpacks” ist aus der Language Pack DVD, die man von Microsoft herunterladen muss und die es auch im MSDNAA gibt.
Abschließend muss man nur noch per “regedit” folgenden Schlüssel aus der Registry löschen:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MUI\UILanguages\en-US.Neustart, fertig.

Lieber Philipp, stelle sicher, dass du die Windows 7 RTM hast und die ‘Language Packs’ auch für die richtige Version sind – also für die RTM (nicht Beta!) und der richtigen Bittigkeit (x86 sind für 32bit, das andere entsprechend). Passt alles?

Hallo habe es wie befolgt ausgeführt aber danach lässt sich Windows 7 Professional nicht mehr starten, habe beides bei MSDNAA heruntergeladen.

War offenbar mein Fehler, hatte das falsche Lang- Pack,
es hat bei mir jetzt auch bestens geklappt!

Mark, do you expect there will be difficulties when some big patches or service packs are launched for Windows 7? Will these big patches install without problems? Is is possible that the system will become partly english and partly finnish/german? If I install the finnish language from the MUI pack, should I treat my operating system as a “finnish version”? I mean, should I install for instance SP1 FI in the future rather than SP1 ENG?
Janne, I do not expect any problems with future updates. As far as I can see MS has separated the languages from core which is a common technique in internationalized applications. So, future updates will be either language-independent, which will cause no trouble at all, or in case of the dependent simply update your new fi-FI directory. After all, the procedure above will most probably have added all necessary registry keys, therefore auto-update should recognize your version as Finnish and pull the FI updates – which you should also do on manual updates.

@Fabian: Nach dem ausführen der Windows6.1….exe wird die lp.cap kurz darauf anscheinend wieder gelöscht. Ich habe sie in der relativ kurzen Zeit verschoben und alles hat auf Anhieb geklappt.

ich habe das gleiche Problem wie Fabian. Habe meine Win7 prof. Version auch von MSDNAA und verstehe Xin’s Einwand nicht. Kannste das näher erläutern, was du genau getan hast und warum?

Fabians Pfad ist falsch. Er hat die Reihenfolge von “langpacks” und “de-de” vertauscht, wenn unter C: wirklich seine Language Pack DVD ist.
ich hab den de-de ordner einfach kopiert gehabt nach c
ja da hab ich oben was falsche hingeschrieben.. so hat ichs nicht in der cmd zeile.. war ein versehen!
habs jetzt grade nochmal von der emulierten cd probiert, aber der fehler bleibt.
er findet ja die datei. un zeigt mir auch die version an.
dann kommt der error.

@xin Es kommt leider genau der gleiche Fehler. Die versionsnummer sind auch die gleichen.
@Meigel: Die lp.cap erscheint kurz nachdem du die .exe ausgeführt hast an dem Speicherort auf dem auch die .exe liegt. Kopiere diese schnell in ein anderes Verzeichnis bevor diese wieder gelöscht wird.

Ich hab mir von MSDNAA auch Windows 7 pro(X64) runtergeladen und instaliert und habe auch Language Pack DVD ruzntergeladen und gebrandt. Habe dann auch cmd auuch diesen befehl eingegeben, aber es kommt ein fehler auf: Error 740, nun komm ich nicht weiter habe dann noch ein freund hinzugezoggen und der weis auch nicht weiter! weis vll. von euch jemand was dies sein könnte!?

Es ist wichtig, dass die Bittigkeit des installierten Windows 7 mit dem des Language Packs übereinstimmt, ansonsten kommt es zu den Fehlern. Vistalizator o.Ä. sollte auf keinen Fall vorher ausgeführt worden sein – damit kommt es im Nachhinein zu diversen Fehlern!
Bei mir hat die Umstellung von Win 7 64 und 32bit geklappt. Es sind entsprechend zwei Language Pack DVDs herunterzuladen.
Zur Kontrolle, das 64bit LP ist 116.034.086 Bytes groß und CRC32 ist B714D015.
